5 Signs Your Muskegon Home Needs Drywall Repair (Don't Ignore These)

If you live in West Michigan, you know our weather can be brutal on homes. Freeze-thaw cycles, humidity, and settling foundations all take a toll on your drywall. Here are five signs it's time to call a pro.

1. Horizontal Cracks Across a Wall A small hairline crack might just be the house settling, but a long horizontal crack — especially one that runs the full width of a wall — can signal a structural issue or serious water damage behind the surface. Don't patch over it; find the cause first.

2. Nail Pops See little bumps or round dents appearing in your wall? Those are nail pops — the drywall is pulling away from the studs. They're common in older Muskegon homes and easy to fix, but if you ignore them, they get worse and can lead to larger sections coming loose.

3. Soft or Spongy Spots Press gently on your wall. If it flexes or feels soft, there's almost certainly moisture damage behind it. In Michigan, this often comes from ice dams, leaking pipes, or bathroom humidity. Wet drywall grows mold fast — this is urgent.

4. Bubbling or Peeling Paint Paint doesn't just bubble for no reason. It's usually moisture pushing through the wall surface. If repainting hasn't fixed it, the drywall itself likely needs replacing.

5. Visible Water Stains Yellow or brown rings on walls or ceilings are a clear sign of a past or active leak. Even if the leak is fixed, stained drywall should be replaced — it's often harboring mold you can't see.
